Everything you need to know about your passport

Passport Information | Everything You Need To Know

Whether you are newlyweds planning out your honeymoon or a couple creating a once in a lifetime adventure, this one is for you. One of the things that most travelers forget while planning their trip is the renewal of their passport. Most travelers don’t realize that some countries will deny you entry if your passport is within six months of expiring. This is not how you want to start your vacation or honeymoon so today I am going to give you all the passport information you need.

Who needs a passport?

If you fall into one of these three categories you will need a passport:

  1. Have family who live abroad that you want to visit
  2. Want to take a vacation abroad
  3. Have a job that may require international travel

There is no age discrimination when it comes to passports for children. Even a newborn will need a passport when traveling international. Here is more information on how to obtain a passport for children under 16

Renew Your Passport

For those who were recently married and have legally changed their name you must also update your passport to reflect this. If your passport does not match your legal name you will have major issues traveling. This is an easy process and can be done while updating your name on all your other documents.

Travel Tip For Newlyweds

If you are traveling for your honeymoon immediately after your wedding be sure that your maiden name is still listed on all your documents since you will not be able to legally change your name before you leave.

As I mentioned earlier, many countries will not allow passengers to cross their borders unless their passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the start of their trip. For example: if you are traveling to China in September of 2018 and your passport is set to expire in January of 2019 you may encounter problems when traveling. To be safe, get your passport updated.

Passport time frame

You always want to leave yourself plenty of time to apply and receive your passport before traveling. There are also different fees that apply whether you need your passport expedited or if it is a brand new passport. Here is more information on fees.

If you need your passport in two weeks or less you will need it expedited. To receive it quicker, head to an agency where you can file for it in person. You always want to give yourself plenty of time but if you are unsure check the processing times for passports.

New Passport

Applying for a passport can be done in five easy steps:

  1. Decide whether you will be submitting for  a passport in person or by mail and fill out the correct form
  2. Collect the supporting documents you need. These include:
    1. Citizenship evidence – this would be your birth certificate
    2. Identification – this would be your drivers license
    3. Proof of relationship (for children under 16)
  3. Get your photo. This can be down at most local pharmacy stores such as CVS or Walgreens and your local post office.
  4. Calculate your fees and payment method. Depending on the type of passport you are applying for and your age, your fee can range. A fee calculate and chart is available to assist you.
  5. Submit!
